ABC’s of Cowan Ave Elementary

Academic Challenge- A great chance to celebrate learning.  The Academic Challenge is a voluntary event for 3-5th graders. Students who participate compete against themselves and others in their grade level to achieve proficiency in geography, speech, math, science and reading comprehension.  After a series of tests and a Super Quiz, awards and medals are given to the top student in each grade and to those achieving proficiency at a fun, high-energy awards night.

Back to School Night- Back to School Night is an event held once a year, at the beginning of the year in the evening. Each classroom teacher gives a presentation outlining their goals for the year and talks about the programs used to meet those goals. This is also an opportunity for the Room Parent(s) to collect the Voluntary PTO Directory Form and enlist volunteers for classroom activities and responsibilities.

Black History Month- A month long celebration held during the month of February. Details forthcoming.

Book Fair - This fundraiser is a weeklong event, held in the Fall, where families can purchase books for themselves or to donate to their teacher’s classroom library.  A percentage of the proceeds help fund Cowan’s numerous programs. 

Bookworm Project -The project serves kindergarten-age children who are having difficulties with the first steps toward literacy. LMU students serve as tutors and work closely with classroom teachers to give students extra help in developing early literacy skills.

Box Tops for Education- To enroll, go to http://www.boxtops4education.com/. Select Cowan Ave Elementary in 90045 and shop online through the site. When you shop and are online, Cowan earns a percentage. Or…clip the tops of products you have at home, Cheerios, Ziploc, Hefty (for the full list, go to the web site) and turn into the PTO box in the main office.
 
Coding Club-Cowan is moving into the 21st Century and preparing our students with exposure to essential skills relevant to this move.  Our Coding Club provides students with the basic training in the computer sciences.  Through our program, students will receive lessons needed to grasp computer coding skills and to better understand current coding languages used by top programmers and engineers.  

Coffee with Mr. D- These are meetings with the principal, Mr. DaSylveira that take place on a monthly basis.  It is a chance for parents to obtain information about things affecting our school and to express any concerns in an informal setting. Dessert with Mr. D occurs in the evening.  Coffee with Mr. D is held in the morning at 8:30am. Dates are announced via the Tiger Group, flyers and through Room Parent(s).

Cowan Crier- The school newsletter that is published throughout the year to highlight and inform the Cowan community.

Cowantigers.org- The official website for the Cowan community. It contains information about past and future events and is updated often. Among many features, the website is a great resource if you need information about volunteering, academics or are looking for a school flyer.

Direct Drive Campaign- Cowan families are asked to contribute financially with a tax-deductible monetary gift. Envelopes are available in the main office and can be placed in the PTO Box.

E-Scrip Campaign- Go online to http://www.escrip.com/ sign-up for free, select Cowan Avenue Elementary as your beneficiary and follow the links to the list of merchants (Vons, Ralphs…) that will give Cowan money every time you shop!

Fall and Spring Fundraiser- A chance to support Cowan by purchasing and selling items from a catalog or list.  A portion of the sales is given to Cowan to support our academic and enrichment programs.

Family Dinner Nights- A fundraiser held at different restaurants throughout the year. Through an agreement between the restaurant and Cowan, a percentage of the money spent by each diner that has a fundraising flyer, will be given to our school.

Harvest Festival- The festival occurs immediately after the school wide Halloween Parade held at the end of the school day. There are crafts, games booths and a Pumpkin Carving Contest.

Mom’s Night Out- A new fundraising event held the summer before school starts in Fall 2011 at a local restaurant. The event is open to businesses owned by Cowan families. Those businesses are invited to sell their merchandise to Cowan moms and to donate a percentage of those sales to support Cowan’s Enrichment Programs. In addition a percentage of the food purchased during the event will also be donated to support Cowan Programs. 

Pajama Night- Pajama Night is the one time of the year that students get to wear their pajamas to school and return in the evening to our school library, still in their pajamas, for Pajama Night. The Book Fair remains open for the event and students listen to stories read to them by volunteers.

Parent Center- The Center is available for parents throughout the school year.

PTO Achievement Awards- Awards given throughout the year to students in each classroom to celebrate their achievement. Parents are notified by phone and/or through school mail. The awards are given on a Monday or Friday during the morning assembly.

PTO Membership Meetings- Membership meetings occur once a month to discuss issues affecting our school. Every parent is encouraged to join PTO by submitting a membership form and $10 to the PTO box.

PTO Volunteer Awards- Awards given by the PTO throughout the year to recognize the commitment and dedication of Cowan parents.

Red Ribbon Week- A national drug prevention campaign held for one week in October. There are activities in and outside of the classroom to help educate our students about the importance of drug prevention.

Round-Up- The Round-up is held in the evening at the beginning of the year to welcome old and new families to Cowan. There’s food for purchase and amplified music. This is a great opportunity to sign up to volunteer with future school events such as Concert by the Canyon, Academic Challenge, Harvest Festival, Book Fair and Fall/Spring Fundraisers.

Safety Drop Off Program- Cowan’s morning curbside Safety Drop-Off Program enables parents to drop off their children in front of the school in a safe and controlled environment. Parent volunteers wear orange vests and staff the program Monday through Friday from 7:40 am to 8:05 am.

Spring Talent Show- Hosted by Cowan's PTO, this student-driven performance showcases the multi-faceted talents of our student body.  Previous shows have been highlighted by amazing student performances, featuring original dance, vocals, and mastery with musical instruments.  We are are proud to say: Cowan's Got Talent!

Spring Picture Fundraiser- A percentage of student picture orders is donated to our school.

STAR- An after school program that is offered five days a week until 6 pm. Before school child care is also available, for an additional fee. Homework assistance and enrichment opportunities are provided. 

STAR NOVA- A series of after school enrichment classes for children that are available throughout the year for a fee. Sessions range from 6-8 weeks. Children in all grade levels can participate. You do not have to attend STAR to participate in STAR NOVA classes.

Teacher Appreciation Week- Held the first week of May to thank the teachers for their commitment to our children. During the week, teachers are showered with appreciation through breakfast, a catered lunch, flowers and notes from students.

Tiger Tea- An organized tour is offered to prospective families to showcase the Cowan Community. A presentation by the administration, Kindergarten teacher(s) and PTO President is given in our school auditorium. Refreshments, provided by volunteers, are served.

Tiger Tutorial- An after school program that tutors students primarily in Language Arts, Math, Spanish, and Chess (Tuesday’s only-extra nominal fee). It is offered five afternoons each week, Monday through Friday from 2:30 - 5:45 p.m.  Please check with staff for current monthly fee.

Welcome to the Big Yard- An event held in the late Spring and organized by the PTO Board to welcome and inform Kindergarten parents about events held at our school.

Winter Program- Music Program that takes place in the morning in Cowan’s auditorium and features our children. It is usually held the week before winter break. Every grade level participates in addition to performances by Cowan Chorus and Orchestra.

Yearbook- A compilation of the school year’s photographs that are submitted by Room Parents, the Cowan community and the Yearbook Committee.
