Introduction

Cowan is pleased to announce the International Studies Program. This program offered to Cowan’s
4th and 5th grade Magnet students. The program supports our International Studies based theme and provides increased global awareness, respect for other countries, a sense of world community and a head start on upper level social studies concepts.

     The Cowan Avenue International Studies Program, facilitated by Hina Yousufzai, presents opportunities that incorporate several aspects of Cowan’s district- based curriculum.

     Questions addressed in the program include, why it is necessary to come together as a global community? In what ways can we come together to address global issues?
     Children will be able to access resources such as UN websites, Foreign Embassies, and Consulates. The overall program will include in class sessions, computer lab time, online assignments, assemblies and field trips as the curriculum delivery methods. These resources will help children as they explore topics such as world health, children’s rights, environmental issues, women’s rights and conflict resolution.

Learning Goals for this program are
to get a sense of the vastness of our world through the exploration of
    different countries and cultures
to understand what it means to be a citizen of the world.
to extend a knowledge of collaboration among individuals with diverse ideas,
     values, customs, beliefs and resources
to get a sense of vital issues facing the leaders of today that will have an
     impact on future generations

     The program will be standards based, expanding on existing 4th and 5th grade standards in History and Social Studies as well as Language Arts. Students will be gaining knowledge and skills that will enable them to complete written assignments and a final project on a country of their choice.

    The entire program will be available to students online. The website will include assignment and project guidelines, resources, a student blog area as well as a wiki site. The International Studies program is an exciting enhancement to the 4th and 5th grade Magnet curriculum.
