School Hours

School begins at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. The first bell will ring at approximately 8:00 a.m., followed by the second bell at 8:05.

Students arriving at school after 8:05 a.m. must enter through the office and submit a tardy slip.

Kindergarteners should line up outside of their classrooms each morning. All other students line up with their classmates on the schoolyard.

Early dismissal Tuesdays (also known as ‘Bank Tuesdays’) begin in October; at that point, school will let out at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays only. There will occasionally be other minimum or shortened days throughout the year; you will be notified in advance of these specific dates. Safety Drop-Off Program

Cowan’s morning curbside drop-off program enables parents to drop off their children in front of the school in a safe and controlled manner. Parent volunteers run the program from 7:40 to 8:05 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Uniforms

Students are asked to wear an approved Cowan uniform to school from Monday through Thursday; (Friday is free-dress day). Boys may wear navy slacks or shorts with a light blue, white or yellow polo shirt; girls may wear navy slacks or shorts, jumpers, or uniform skirts/skorts with light blue, white or yellow shirts. Students may also wear a Cowan Tigers T-shirt.

Meals

Breakfast ($0.60), lunch ($1.00), milk, juice, or ice cream can be purchased each day with cash, or money can be deposited in advance on your child’s lunch card. See Sgt. Martinez, our cafeteria manager, in the morning before school. Menus come out monthly.

Cowan participates in the free/reduced lunch program for those who qualify. Application forms are available in the school office. Click on Meals for the lunch and breakfast menu information.

Office Appointments

A meeting with the principal or assistant principal can be scheduled by first filling out a meeting request form in the school office. You can request this form from any of the office staff.

Visiting Policy

All visitors to the Cowan Avenue campus must first report to the office to sign the visitors book and receive a guest badge, which must be worn at all times while on campus. Please sign out at the conclusion of your visit.

Rainy Days

All students (except kindergarteners) are to be dropped off in the auditorium on rainy days. Teachers will meet their students there and escort them to class.

Earthquake Safety

Parents are asked each year to provide a small earthquake kit for each student to be kept at the school in the event of an emergency. The office will provide information about what should be included.

Emergency Cards

Emergency cards with important information about your child should be updated each year. The information includes a list of those people you authorize to pick up your child in the event of an emergency. The school will not release your child to anyone not listed on his/her emergency card.

Library

Cowan’s Wonder of Reading Library is available for all students. A signed permission slip from a parent/guardian is required to check out books.
