Playground Rules
General Playground Rules
Play games that are safe, not dangerous. Contact sports are not allowed. Students should keep their hands and feet to themselves. We follow the “hands off” policy. Pulling and tugging at clothing, fighting (even “play fighting”), wrestling and karate are not allowed.
There are handball, basketball and kickball courts assigned for each grade level.
Toys are not to be brought to school. No selling or trading of cards is allowed at school.
Snacks are not allowed on the lower yard.
Do not climb any of the equipment poles (tetherball, volleyball, basketball poles).
If a student is hurt, travel with one student partner to the office (not a group).
There are no “lock-outs.” Any student wanting to play, can. Play fairly and allow for others to rotate into the game.
Take turns. No one can “hold” a place for a friend. There are no “cuts”.
Playground equipment and assigned areas are to be used for the game it was intended. Do not kick handballs or basketballs. Do not sit on the balls. Misuse eventually ruins the balls.
Inform an adult if a ball has gone over the fence.
Listen for the bell. Freeze when bell rings. Follow directions of school personnel immediately and with good manners. Pick up your belongings. Take balls back to the ball room on your way back to class.
Try to solve a problem before going to an adult. Children are encouraged to solve minor problems themselves, using discussion, voting and/or “rock, paper, scissors”.
Playground supervisors are expected to observe students for good sportsmanship, helpful actions, and good problem-solving behaviors. Students may be recognized for these behaviors with “Tiger Tickets” which can then be shared with their teacher for positive recognition. The tickets are submitted for a drawing each month. Tickets drawn will entitle those students to enjoy a pizza lunch. The final drawing includes Target Gift Cards
All playground disagreements that can not be resolved by the individuals involved will be brought to an adult supervisor. Students will be given an opportunity to come to a mutual solution. Supervisors will facilitate the students’ efforts to reach a mutual solution. If one is not reached, the supervisor will resolve the situation.
Conflicts in which students cannot come to a solution or a student has a pattern of
breaking rules:
First offense: Student takes a “timeout” from the game until he/she decides he/she is ready to rejoin the game.
Second offense: Students who need a “cooling off” period will be directed to a specific area by the playground assistant.
Third offense: Student is removed from the game and “benched” for the duration of recess. Any students involved in physical altercations will meet with the principal.
